Lars :: Big Boy Bed

Today Lars and I bought a crib mattress at Ikea and set it up at home for his "big boy bed." Sometime soon, Adam will build the base for the bed, but I thought it was worth trying out as soon as possible. So tonight, after a bath, Mickey, and a book we laid him down on his bed and tucked him in. He fell asleep on the bed holding onto his blanket and his "mamma teddy." But Adam couldn't go to bed with the thought that he could get up in the night and open the front door - so he moved him to his crib after only two hours of successful "big boy" sleeping.

Lars :: Swimming

For Joyce's birthday we were sitting outside on the patio in Palm Springs drinking coffee and eating brunch and Lars wanted to be swimming. I told him that we couldn't swim until I had a swim suit on and he had a swim diaper on. He thought for a second - literally one second - and ran into the house. He emerged minutes later holding the top to my swim suit and his swim diaper. What could I do but put on my suit and hop in?

Lars :: Itsy Bitsy Spider

Lars and I were sitting on the floor playing with his toys in the kitchen when a tiny spider crawled out of his cabinet. He freaked out so I grabbed a shoe and smooshed it. Then I tossed the shoe at the backdoor. He spent the next ten minutes or so afraid of the floor and the shoe. I eventually got him distracted enough to forget about it.

Then later that night we were at dinner with my mom and I told her and Adam about Lars being afraid of the spider when Lars suddenly pounded his hand on the table then pretended to 'throw' something over his shoulder. He was showing Gigi how we smooshed the spider and threw it out.

Lars :: Piped across the bow

This weekend at Dad's retirement in Chicago, Lars wanted to stand with Gigi and Papa up in front. It was technically a formal part of the retirement ceremony when an emotional poem is read (The Watch) and the outgoing officer and his wife walk across the "bow" for the final time. Lars was really insistent he be a part of it, so my mom grabbed his hand and Lars was piped across the bow with his Papa.

Lars :: The big helper

My sciatica has recently been really bad. Hopefully acupuncture isn't making it worse. Last night I was stuck on the floor and the phone rang. The phone I could get to was dead, so I asked Lars to get me the phone. Within seconds he was back with the other phone. I couldn't have told you for the life of me where it was, but he knew!

A little while later, when I tried to stand up, he came and put his arms around me and gave me a hug because I was crying from the pain.

Lars :: Words

Last weekend while in Chicago Lars put together his first sentence. He was starving and we told him we would stop at a McDonalds if we saw one and get chicken nuggets. While driving we passed on that was on the other side of divided highway and we couldn't easily get to it. So we hoped he hadn't seen it and kept going. He had seen it. Since my mom was driving he started saying "Gigi, vrrmm vrrmm, bock bock" while pointing behind him. He wanted Gigi to drive to the chicken that was back there. He shouted it all the way to the next McDonalds, which was thankfully only a few miles away - and on the right side of the road.
